The start:
Kafka is super pumped for today. He has waited 4 long, check that, 13 long years for this day to come...his final day of high school. He parks his rusted-out 2004 Chrysler Neon, and heads for the doors...
Each week, you are required create an original post and respond to two posts. These posts may be poems, song lyrics, short stories, Ted Talks, aphorisms, pictures, news stories, etc. Each Monday, a new posting will go up, and I will check to make sure that each student has responded to the previous week's post. What do you need to include in your response? That is up to you--what stood out to you? What moved you? What was your initial reaction? Do you agree? Do you disagree? Is there something you want to analyze? These are free responses, so the content is up to you. I am not going to set a limit on the length of the response--just something longer than a tweet and shorter than an essay. In addition to your own response, you must comment on two other students' response (you know, like dialogue or something).
Okay, one final class story. I will begin with a prompt, and then the next person adds 1-3 sentences. Each person should add to the story three times over the week. PLEASE KEEP EACH POST TO 1-3 Sentences! Also, I completely encourage creativity, but please do not be a "story-ender"--by that I mean, don't kill off the main character or try to take the story to a dead end.

We have read 13 books if you count the summer reading:
Thousand Splendid Suns, Brave New World, Picture of Dorian Gray Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Thief and the Dogs, Kafka on the Shore Summer reading book (Song of Solomon or Love Medicine) Great Gatsby, Macbeth Things They Carried, Midnight's Children, Awakening, Thing Around Your Neck Choose one of these books and write a different ending. Feel free to have fun with this, but you should explain/justify your change. You can go back as far into the story that you want to make the change (by this I mean that you don't just have to change the last page or last chapter, you can make the change at any point in the book). I haven't thought this through all of the way, but I think I would want to change The Great Gatsby. I would have something bad happen to Daisy and Tom to punish them for their actions, and I would want something good to happen for Wilson. Okay, as requested, this week's prompt is about the characters in the books that we have read for this class, English 9, and English 10. Who is your favorite character? Why? Who is your least favorite character? Why? There was discussion about "objectively bad" vs. "subjectively bad" and whiniest character--I will leave it up to you if you want to go into these distinctions or not.
My favorite character is Sada (Oshima's older brother)--many reasons why, but I respect him for leaving the daily grind to open a surf shop. Hoshino is a close second for me. Honorable mentions to Dill (Mockingbird), Mercutio, Nurse, Ikemefuna, and Ron Franz My least favorite character is Nick Carraway. Yes, I know he is just a narrator, but I have soooo many questions about him. If it was clear that he is gay, he would actually move to one of my favorite characters, but as he stands, I just don't like him. Objectively bad: Macbeth, duh Whiniest character: Romeo |
