The first piece of artwork that came to mind for me is the statue of David by MIchelangelo. I was in Florence in 2006, and I was able to visit Galleria dell'Accademia to see the original. The sheer size of the statue is awe inspiring. Then, to think that this statue was CARVED with such detail hundreds of years ago--just mind blowing. It made me feel small: not necessarily physically, but in a metaphoric (ha!) way. I am a huge fan of art, and I tend to visit any major art gallery, but this is by far the most impressive statue that I have seen in person. Honorable mention to A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat for being the most impressive (not necessarily my favorite) painting I have seen in person. It hangs in the Chicago Institute of Art (a tiny copy hangs by the door of my classroom). In person, it is huge, and it is amazing to get up close and see the pointillism technique.
For your post this week, I want you to select a piece of art that moves you. When did you first see, listen to, or create this piece of art? How does it move you/make you feel? Please hyperlink to the artwork.

If you were given the capability to travel back in time to any period in history, where would you head to and why?
I stole this prompt from a list of College App Essay Topics. I am sorry to bring up college app essays, but I found this topic to be thought provoking. All of the ages that I can think of that would be "awesome" have their share of problems. I would love to go back to the Renaissance period in Italy with all of the amazing artists and inventors, but I am not really built to handle no indoor bathrooms, etc. So, for the purposes of this post, I am going with 1920's Paris to hang out with the Lost Generation ex-pat writers. I would spend my days at Shakespeare and Company bookstore; Les Deux Magots, Café de Flore and/or La Closerie des Lilas cafes for meals; and at The Dingo or Harry's bar at night . I love to eat and read, so I am thinking this would be an interesting time and place to visit. Hat tip to the movie Midnight in Paris for the inspiration. Okay, I know you are stressed. So to combat that, I am giving you a Ted Talk on stress. It is by Kelly McGonigal called How to Make Stress Your Friend. For your blog, describe what stuck out to you about her talk and then discuss how you can apply it to your life: what stresses you out? How can you address these stressors with some of these strategies? Do you have any tips for others on dealing with stress?
Bonus material: Here is the NYT article where I found a link to the TedTalk. It has some nice suggestions. I want you to blog about your summer...however, as we begin Year 2 of IB HL English, we are going to focus heavily on poetry. With that in mind, I want you to write your blog post as a poem. It does not matter what type of poem, just make sure you put in a little effort (feel free to go haiku, just make sure you do a handful of them).
