What is the best song that is associated with a holiday (it does not have to be a Christmas song--it can be linked to any holiday)? Now, you have to explain your answer and break the song down. For example, Last Christmas by Wham is a really deep song on many levels. The speaker is caught up in the feelings of the season--he gives his heart away too easily. The classic Latin allusion, Once bitten, Twice shy, is used to show how the speaker is now very hesitant to enter into a new relationship. It is Christmas time again, and he is still suffering the pain from...Last Christmas. Also, to add to the beauty of this song, the video is AMAZING. The existential crisis that the speaker is suffering is accentuated by the fact that the woman who stomped on his heart is at the same house WITH A DIFFERENT MAN (George Michael is the broken hearted man, and the woman from last Christmas is with his Wham! bandmate)! She too must be suffering from the incident because she is wearing the pin that the speaker gave to her LAST CHRISTMAS; however, at some point, she gives it to the new man, but he wears it upside down. At the end, they all seem to realize that they must move on. Overall, this a beautiful ballad, demonstrating the sonorous tones of George Michael's golden pipes, and his hair is totally on point (and feathered) in the video (this is the last time that George Michael appeared without facial hair). Taking in the content of the song and the video, Last Christmas is the best holiday song.

Everyone's addicted to something in some shape or form. What are things you can't go without (please keep this fun--if you have a serious addiction that requires attention, please let a parent know)
I am addicted to coffee/cold brew, but that is not what I want to address. I currently have an addiction to Hallmark Christmas movies. If you have never watched them, you may think that I am crazy. Some of you may have stereotyped-views of me right now: "a man that watches Hallmark Christmas movies, what is wrong with him?" or "an English teacher that watches that lame stuff, is he a serious person?". Well, let me tell you, these movies are highly entertaining. There are some good ones that move a person emotionally, but for me, the worse the movie is, the more entertaining it is to watch. First of all, there is a checklist for every Hallmark movie. Starts in a big city; a man, or more likely a woman, has a stressful job that brings in money but no happiness, and he or she has lost the spirit of Christmas; this person is drawn to a small town (the reasons: a relative has died, a store needs saving, business takes them there to close something down, etc); he or she falls for someone in the town--this person has also lost someone or has struggled; the town has some sort of festival that the person HAS to stay for; there is ice skating; both people rediscover the spirit of Christmas; oh, and there is usually a pick-up truck and wise, older person. Now, if you watch the movies and try to identify all of these characteristics, it becomes a game. Bonus points if you recognize actors in the movie from other Hallmark movies. So there you have it, my deep, dark secret that isn't a secret at all because I talk about it with anyone that will listen. |
