10/16-10/22 Opinion on Hot Topic (check the date)--I am posting this one a few days early10/13/2017 On nytimes.com today, the top article was quiz about Facebook's Hate Speech Rules. It is only 6 questions, and I missed all 6. Also, Rose McGowan, an actress, accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault and made comments on twitter that led to her account suspension on Twitter. This got me thinking even more about social media and the responsibility that companies like Twitter and Facebook have to protect users. Add in all of the "Russians influenced the election with fake news on social media" discussion, and this makes for a hot topic. So, for your post, take the New York Times quiz, and then I want you to reflect on the role of these companies to police their platforms. Are they responsible to protect people? Should they filter the material? Twitter seems to suspend accounts all of the time for "threats", but why don't they suspend the President's account? These are all issues to consider.
NYTimes Quiz Write a story that use all of the following words: feast, fire, modify, squash, robbed, forgotten, under-stated. The story should be creative, but it should also make sense.
Have fun! The Great Gatsby is often regarded as one of the greatest works in American Literary history. But, you can make it better, right? If you had the ability to change the book, what change or changes would you make? As always, I want you to be creative with this, so I am leaving it fairly open. As you consider and then describe what you would change, make sure that you explain how that change would affect the overall meaning of the book. You could change the end (Gatsby lives! Gatsby goes to jail! Myrtle lives! Aliens abduct Tom!) or any part of the novel (Nick and Gatsby are a couple!). Again, have fun with this, but make sure you explain the effect.
